Is the "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule accurate?

No. That rule is outdated. Dogs mature much faster in their first two years, then aging slows down — and the rate varies significantly by size. Small dogs (under 20 lbs) age slower in later years; large and giant breeds age faster.

Does dog breed affect the calculation?

Yes, significantly. A 10-year-old Chihuahua and a 10-year-old Great Dane are at very different life stages. Larger breeds generally have shorter lifespans and hit "senior" status earlier.

At what age is a dog considered a senior?
