A timer gives a task a visible boundary, but the duration should fit the work. Try the Pomodoro Timer with a specific outcome, such as writing one test or reviewing one function.
Run a small experiment
Choose a task you can describe in one sentence. Remove distractions, start a 25-minute session if that length suits you, and note interruptions instead of switching tasks immediately. Afterwards, record what was completed and whether the timer helped. Take a break before choosing the next task.
Deep debugging may suit a longer uninterrupted period; routine administration may suit shorter blocks. The timer does not establish one scientifically optimal duration for everyone.
Check browser behavior
A background tab or sleeping device can throttle timers. Sound and notifications depend on browser settings and permissions. Test them before relying on the timer as an alarm.
Compare completed work and interruption count across similar sessions, not just the number of cycles. Adjust or stop the technique if it increases stress or interrupts useful concentration.
